Charity for Change Reaches Fundraising Milestone

LES CollectionThe following was featured in the January 4, 2012 edition of Gulfshore Business Daily

Naples-based Charity for Change announces that the organization’s School “Giver” Program has now donated more than $50,000 to dozens of charities since its inception in 2008. The milestone was reached in December when the organization tallied the collections from Session 2 of the school year. Students in five elementary schools select charities to support by donating their allowance, tooth fairy money and other spare change. Community Partners such as HomeTech and Shamrock Bank donate to the students’ cause during the weekly “Counting for Charity” math game the classrooms play online. Session 2 focused on charities related to food, shelter and emergency, such as the Harry Chapin Food Bank and St. Matthew’s House. During Session 3, students are raising money for charities involved in health care. The participating schools are Calusa Park, Golden Terrace, Lake Park and Lely elementary schools and Royal Palm Academy.

Life In Naples

The January 2011 issue of Life In Naples featured an article about Charity for Change and the School "Giver" Program.  Following is an excerpt from the article:

January is the time when many people make resolutions to be a better person, to be patient and kind, to "pay it forward" or give back.

But children in four Collier schools make these resolutions throughout the year as part of the Charity for Change character development curriculum. They learn about cooperation, respect, responsibility, tolerance, kindness, perseverance, self-control, honesty, integrity and fairness.

Charity for Change, a Naples-based charity, helps students learn these important characteristics while they also raise money for charities in the community.

A World of Change

Two articles appeared in the August 2009, issue of e'Bella.  Following is an excerpt from one article by Janelle Kuehnert:

Charity for Change is a nonprofit organization in Naples designed to create and promote opportunities for generous giving as a way of living. Its vision is to create a charitable movement to encourage daily giving for all ages.

One way this program connects with its young audience is through its mascot, Giver. The tall, bright orange orangutan does a dance known as the "Giver Shiver," encouraging students to dance as well after they've made a donation. Giver promotes the Character Trait of the month and preaches his motto, "It's a great day to give!"

Charity for Change embraces a character-development curriculum with its Giver Program, which allows students to learn and practice positive character traits and enjoy the wonderful feeling that comes from helping others. Classrooms can win weekly prizes and students can be nominated for Student of the Month awards. Plus, kids can earn additional dollars for their classroom charity by playing the Counting for Charity math game.

"You can make a difference; and together we can make change" is what Charity for Change strives for. Whether it is changing the world through volunteer work, donating their piggy bank change or sponsoring a family for the holidays, the students who participate are touched by the lasting difference they can make.

Elementary students learn that change can make a difference

Florida Weekly, June 11, 2009
.
Charity for Change launched its School "Giver" Program on a pilot basis at Calusa Park and Lely elementary schools last fall, and since then the schools have collected more than $10,000 in pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.

"Change does count," says Karen Conley, CEO of Charity for Change. "These kids are showing us that even in these challenging economic times, they can work together to make a big impact for those in need."

Teachers start a School "Giver" session at www.charityforchange.org, where their students are given three charities to research. After learning about the charities, the students vote to adopt one for their class and then set a donation goal for the session. They are encouraged to bring whatever loose change they can each day to their classroom and deposit the change in the classroom "bank" that is supplied by Charity for Change.

No monkey business: Orangutan Teaches Lely Students About Giving

Naples Daily News, June 1, 2009

What's six-feet tall and teaches kids about charity?

It sounds like a joke, but Giver --the orange orangutan-- is a celebrity of sorts at Lely Elementary School. The mere sight of him elicits screams on par with the reaction to a Hannah Montana concert, and the students' enthusiasm for his message has led Lely Elementary School to raise $3,500 for charity.

The students are learning about charity through a pilot program put on by Charity for Change, a local non-profit that promotes giving as a way of living.  The organization uses Giver, a giant, orange orangutan to teach students about charity.

Guest Commentary, Naples Daily News, May 9, 2009

Charity for Change is a nonprofit organization in Naples which promotes charitable giving as a way of living. The School "Giver" Program has inspired local children from Calusa Park and Lely elementary schools to become "givers" themselves.
